How To Replace A New batteries safely for your Vape

Intro

In this article, we will be breaking down the various types of batteries and more importantly how to charge, maintain and improve their life-span. There won’t be any talks about eliquid, vape juices or even vape liquid. For more information on these, you could check out our article here, but as always, a trip to one of our vape shops in Malaysia could be even more helpful.

As always though, we try to cater to all different vapers across the South Asia and the world in fact, so whether you are just deciding on making the switch from smoking traditional cigarettes to starting to use e-cigarettes, here at the Labavape shop we’ve got you covered!

We all know how hazardous to your health tobacco cigarettes are, especially after knowing all the harmful chemicals mixed into them and so on…

There’s a huge variety of vaping batteries available on the South Asia Vaping market, including lanavape, Eleaf, Joyetech and Vaping Outlaws to name a few but, how did they come about in the first place?

Batteries

Batteries used in E-Cigarettes were originally adapted from rechargeable batteries, mainly used in flashlights and other devices but we’ve come a long way since then!

Battery type 18350

Today’s batteries come in all different shapes and sizes, including 18350, 18490 / 18500 and 18650 batteries were available, whilst some of the newer devices are designed to be used with single or dual variations of 18650, 20700 or 21700 batteries. In some cases, mods come with battery adapters, making the vape mods cross-compatible with various sizes of batteries.

Battery type 18650 and 21700

So you’ve purchased a new set of batteries, should you use them straight away or not? We always recommend fully charging (4.2V) and then fully draining the batteries back down to 3.7V. The reason for this is because rechargeable batteries are considered to be safest between the above-mentioned voltages.

A phenomenon called “Memory effect” also comes into play at this point. The repeated charging and discharging of the batteries from 3.7V to 4.2V and vice versa, prompts the battery’s chemical make-up to assume this as standard. This means that the batteries are “programmed” to work at their optimum performance and hold the best possible charge at those voltages.

Battery charging cycle

Once the battery has been drained, you can recharge the battery up to 4.2V once again and continue to repeat this process going forward. Some variable wattage/voltage devices have a “low voltage protection” circuit built into the device, which may not let you fire your e-cigarette if the batteries do not have enough charge in them. If this does occur then simply remove the batteries, charge them fully and then insert them back into your device.

Lifespan

The normal lifespan of an external battery tends to be between 6 – 12 months but if you notice the batteries are not charging up to 4.2V which can appear as 4.19V or 4.18V on the display of the charger, then it is time to consider replacing your batteries with brand new ones. We would also advise replacing your batteries if they are damaged in any way for safety reasons.

More on Battery Types

The most common type of battery would be the 18650 series of batteries, which are so-called because they measure 18mm in diameter and 65mm in height. 18650 batteries can vary in capacity (mAh) which is normally between 1800mAh – 3000mAh and can have amp ratings between 10A – 35A depending on the brand and type of battery. The higher the amps in a battery, the safer is tends to be, and an Amp rating of 20 above would be highly recommended.

Vape kits also come in a wide variety but depending on the one you may have, it will either have an internal battery or use external batteries. If your e-cig kit has an internal battery these will normally be charged using a USB or USB-C cable depending on which option your device supports and would normally take roughly between 2 – 4 hours to charge the battery fully. These batteries tend to make the users vaping experience simpler, by eliminating the need to remove them from the device. Not having an external battery charger may also be a bonus for some people, although we tend to prefer them due to their inbuilt circuitry and faster-charging speeds.

Although most Electronic Cigarettes have USB ports only a handful are intended to be charged this way. They are usually intended for firmware upgrades. If your batteries are removable we recommend you use an external charger such as the Vaping  Battery Charger.

If your device uses external batteries, (which I believe is a better option and personally choose to use) you also have the option of carrying a variation of batteries, for use within your mod. Due to the large choice of batteries available online, sometimes even the most advanced vapers can easily get confused which batteries are the best option to use for the device they have.

I personally use Molicel P26A 18650 due to their 2600mAh battery capacity and a pulse rating of up to 25 Amps. I also use these since I believe them to be the best for my Aegis legend mod. As of when this article is being written, these particular batteries are Samsung’s second most powerful 18650 batteries and I find the balance between battery life and amp rating to be perfect for my particular vaping needs.

Which One Is Better, Disposable Vape vs Refillable Vape

Refillable vapes allow for greater customization compared to disposable vapes. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs, so you can find the perfect one for your style. With refillable e-cigarettes, you have the ability to choose from a wide range of e-liquid flavours, and adjust the intensity, cloud size, and inhaling experience to your liking. Refillable vapes are more cost-effective in the long run too. They start at around £8.99 and e-liquid refills can cost as little as £1 for a 10ml bottle which could last you a week, so you’ll save money compared to constantly buying disposable vapes.

The User Experience:

Using a refillable e-cigarette is simple! All you need to do is open the secure lid or plug and fill it with your desired e-liquid. Refilling is quick, clean, and easy, thanks to e-liquid bottles with nozzles. Changing the coil is also much simpler and cleaner than it used to be. In general you just take the pod or tank off from your vape device and the used coil can just be pulled out from the base and swapped with a fresh one. Some devices will even come with a whole pod you replace once the coil needs to be replaced. This makes the whole process of changing the coil effortless and takes less than 5 seconds.

If all of that sounds pretty simple, then using a disposable vape takes it to the next level. Take it out of the box, remove the seal and then inhale. When it runs out, just simply dispose of it. Disposables really do offer the simplest way to try vaping and see if it is the right way for you to switch from smoking.

Disposable e-cigarettes are designed for convenience. They come pre-charged and pre-filled with e-liquid, so you can use them right out of the packaging. They’re also lightweight and portable, making them a great option for the on-the-go. However, the cost of disposable vapes can add up over time. They typically retail for around £5 – £6, which may seem like a good deal initially, especially when compared to the cost of cigarettes but keep in mind that you’ll need to buy a new one each time you run out of e-liquid. Additionally, disposable vapes often use lower-quality components, which can result in a less satisfying vaping experience compared to a vape that has been designed to last you 2 years or more. Most disposable vapes will last the average user approximately 2 to 3 days.

It’s also worth considering the environmental impact of your e-cigarette choice. Disposable vapes contribute to plastic and battery waste, which can be harmful to the environment, although there are now some more environmentally friendly options like the VYKO Paper Bar where the outer shell is made from paper instead of plastic and the Riot Bar which uses PLA plastic, which is made from cornstarch. However, refillable vapes continue to offer a more environmentally friendly option, with only the coil needing to be replaced occasionally. You can expect most refillable vape kits to last you at least a couple of years, with the coil needing to be replaced once a week on average.

Decision Time:

So, which option is right for you? If you value convenience or are a little concerned that setting up a new vape may be difficult, then disposable vapes might be the way to go. But if you’re looking for more customization options or the most cost efficient choice then refillable e-cigarettes might be a better fit. What Is A Good Alternative to sweet e-liquids for Disposable Vape

One of the most recurring problems that we, as vapers, have is our coils burning out. There are many reasons for why this might happen and one of them is in relation to the e-liquids that you use. You may not think this is the case but I can assure you that the type of e-liquid that you are vaping plays a part in how long your coils will last.

Factors that affect coil life?

Firstly, the ratio of PG/VG within the e-liquid is an easy indicator as to which type of vape tank the liquid is best used with. we have a great guide answering the question of “What is PG/VG” and it is full of useful information, breaking down exactly what is in your bottle of e-liquid. E-Liquids with a higher Propylene Glycol (PG) ratio are better suited to mouth to lung (MTL) tanks and e-liquids which have a higher ratio of Vegetable Glycerin (VG) are better for use in Sub Ohm tanks and Rebuildable Atomizers.

A good example of a mouth to lung (MTL) vape tank would be the Aspire Nautilus Mini and a 10ml bottle of Blue Crush from Lanavape would be the perfect accompaniment. If you are using a sub ohm or rebuildable vape tank/atomizer then it would be better to use a higher VG based e-liquid such as Vanilla Custard by the Custard Company.

Do you prime your coils correctly?

When using a vape tank with a new coil for the first time it is very important to make sure that you have primed your coil correctly before use, to avoid burning the coil out and dramatically shortening the time you will be able to use it. If you need any information on How to Prime Coils then you can click to read an in-depth guide on this topic.

Sweet e-liquids may caramelise!

Another important factor, which is always worth thinking about, is how sweet the e-liquid you are using is. The sweeter the e-liquid is, the more likely it will be that it will contain natural or artificial sweeteners. The sweeteners with the e-liquid may caramelise on the coil within your tank which gives a similar issue to burning out the coil. Due to the caramelised e-liquid on the coil, the cotton wicking material cannot be saturated correctly and the coil tends heats up and gives you a burnt taste. To fix this issue you would need to change your coil more regularly to keep the best possible performance.

I would also take note, that some e-liquids are very sweet and can sometimes burn out a coil within a few (2 or 3) days compared to the normal lifespan of a coil (7 – 10 days). Depending on the amount of usage and the power of the device you are using can both factor into the shortening of the coils life with these sweeter e-liquids. Unfortunately, no matter how well you think you have looked after the coil, this will happen and there isn’t really a way to get around it happening.

What is a good alternative to sweet e-liquids?

There are so many different options of great e-liquids which will prolong the life of your coils. Tobacco, Fruity and Menthol e-liquids would be a perfect example of this. If you are a fan of menthol e-liquids, these would, in my opinion, be the best option. The menthol and plain tobacco or fruit-based e-liquids tend to have very little sweeteners in and are a very “coil-friendly” choice.

How long does a coil last

The amount if time your coil lasts is completely dependant on how you use it. A coil won’t usually last longer than a few weeks, but this would ultimately depend on 3 main variables, how often you vape, what device you use, what e-liquid you use. Coils used in a very high powered device with very high VG e-liquids will likely  not last as long as very low powered devices with high PG e-liquid.
